Roman Pottery
Terra Sigillata
Terra sigillata is the classic fine ceramic ware of Roman times. It was produced mainly in Italy and Gaul, but was exported throughout the Roman Empire and even beyond its borders. Maker's marks found on some terra sigilliata provide archaeologists with a unique opportunity to trace the object back to an individual maker. In addition, maker's marks are a datable signature so we can also find out when the pot was made and, by extension, when that potter lived.
